Airlock query

Post by AnyOldIron » Tue Jan 13, 2015 9:25 pm

Hi all,

I'm quite new to brewing so there may be quite a simple answer to this, but....

I've just pitched a new brew tonight (only my third) and have an issue with my airlock. Water is being sucked into the FV from the airlock. The temp of wort was just over 20 deg celcius and the room 2 degrees cooler. Being an engineer and nowing a little about expansion etc. I'm thinking there is a negative pressure down to that but it's not really that big a difference is it? I've decided to cover the hole with plastic for the time being while the yeast starts to do it's thing, hoping that maybe in the morning CO2 will be starting to build.

Is this common? Would this be a good idea?

I'm not really panicking at this point but would really appreciate a touch of advice whether this is common or whatever.

Cheers in advance good folk

Airlock query

You are correct, and you have done the right thing.

The only time it happens to me is when I pick up the FV and don't crack the lid but I have seen it before.

Don't worry, but you don't want that water in your FV. If you use star san your airlock with that to prevent contamination.

Great thanks Lee I'll have a wee look before heading out to work tomorrow then.

Been intending on getting some vodka for it but seeing as voddy isn't my choice of spirit I keep forgetting.... Can't be sticking whiskey in there haha.

I'll follow your call and get some star fill, Cheers!

Or you could just chuck the airlock and tape over the hole. :wall

I gathered you meant star San. Thought star may have been a different trade name or something but nice one thanks.

I've left a bit of thin plastic sheet over it for now. Looks to have a decent seal so will check tomorrow, hopefully there'll be some pressure building by then and I can try the airlock again. Thanks
