Mini-scales

Post by Jim » Wed Jan 14, 2015 4:10 pm

Just bought these. The intention is to use them for weighing out water treatment salts more accurately, since at the moment I have to use a 5ml spoon to estimate how much I'm putting in.

I've not calibrated them properly yet, but they seem pretty good straight out of the box.

Water treatment salts...right...you'll be blacking out the windows of your car next;)
An a more serious note consider swapping out any cheap batteries supplied in them. I've had the life of 2 sets of these type of jewellery scales shortened due to corrosion/leakage.

Yes, I'm pretty sure I know what type of people the majority of these scales get sold to. :lol:

Thanks for the tip about the batteries - I'll keep an eye on them.

If you don't have weights to test them, you can use coins

All coin weights listed here at Royal Mint site eg 10p= 6.5g

20p = 5.0g etc

I got the same scales. As you say, cracking for the money. I use them for small quantities of hops.

They're offensively cheap. I've ordered a set too, for exactly the same purpose.

I ordered two sets myself for water treating too - ordered from Hong Kong via Ebay.

When they failed to turn up after 5 weeks, I contacted the seller who gave me full refund as they couldn't trace them. How dissapointed I was when a fortnight later the postie appeared with a parcel ;)......

Yes, I got mine from Amazon as well, as per James' link above. They came within a couple of days of ordering, so they've got to be from the UK.

If you don't have weights to test them, you can use coins
1p=1/8oz, 2p=1/4 oz. no idea why i know this

Also very useful to measure quantities of liquid for testing alkalinity, takes a lot of the guesswork / is the scale printed accurate anyway.

Looked at this on Amazon and underneath where it shows you other things purchasers usually buy with this item - 2'x3' ziplock bags ;)
