Alternative Fermenters

Post by TempTest » Sat Jan 24, 2015 12:01 am

So, most homebrew shops sell pale, wide neck or demi-john fermenters. I'm aware that any food grade container could equally be used as a fermenter instead. Obviously some containers will have more suitable characteristics such as smooth insides and easy access for cleaning, accessibility for drilling a hole and installing a tap, etc.

Given my need to find a fermenter of restricted dimensions for use in a (small) fermentation fridge I need to consider options other than my current wide neck wine fermenters... So, do you use anything a little different to the run-of-the-mill purpose-made brewing fermenters that you have success with?

Thanks!

30l Storage boxes from Tesco - food grade PP, flat sides for tapping, stackable and tight fitting but non-gas tight lid so airlock not required. Better still.... £4 each as opposed to £10-15 for a youngs style bucket.

(see in the other thread you've already noted these  )

Seen others use the 30l mango chutney drums for fermenting - seem to be quite comapct a well.
