STC1000 and relay

Post by mosquat » Wed Feb 25, 2015 9:53 pm

Hello all,

I've followed a couple of posts on here around adding a relay to an STC1000 so it can be used to control a heating element - my main source of info was this post:

viewtopic.php?f=6&t=46225

So I got the same relay and socket as Timbobist.

I've wired it up once already and the relay buzzed loudly then popped (with smoke)

So I tried again with another relay and exactly the same thing is happening - I managed to turn off before this relay blew up.

Any advice on this would be appreciated - I expect number 1 comment will be to get someone else to wire it up :)

check the coil voltage of the relay, should be 240V AC,think maplins have moved there codes around some stuff that was 240v is now linking to 12v stuff

Yes, if you've hooked up a 12v relay to 240v then it won't end well.

Cheers for that guys, you're right....hopefully they will exchange it tomorrow.

Maybe I did wire it correctly after all

Electronics don't work after you let out the magic smoke. ...

I found this site quite useful as an entry into relays and electronics

Hi Mos

I believe you are wanting to use an ATC1000 & relay to temp control your HLT.
The also now sell an ATC100 that has a built in 30A relay.
I bought one last year and have been using it since.
Less than a tenner delivered, best brew bargain I have.

How do you use it? Do you use the sensor that comes with it and dangle it in the water, or do you use a different sensor?

Norm,

Just about to build myself a temp control unit and was looking to get an STC 1000. What the difference between that and the ATC100?

The STC1000 is two relays, each rated at 10A, so you can hook up both a heating element and a chiller to the same unit.

The ATC1000 is a single relay, rated at 30A (allegedly, there's some debate on that in the reviews, but looks like 13A minimum), so you can hook up *either* a heating element *or* a chiller, but I believe switching which mode its in is a bit of a pain.

So..

If you're using it for things with a load < 10A and need, or might need in the future, heating and chilling then an STC1000 is your guy - e.g. a fermentation fridge

If you're using it with a load > 10A, and only need to heat or chill, then the ATC1000 is the one - e.g. a HLT

If you're using it with a load > 10A and need to heat and chill (or if you need more than one relay for other reasons) then you probably want an STC1000 and some external SSRs.

the ATC800+ controller, seen here [url=https://flic.kr/p/d6m99G]Image

controls both heating and cooling concurrently ok.

has a 30a relay on the cooling circuit so can switch much bigger fridges/freezers

it has a nice big see from the other side of the room display and a wipe clean front face.

it wont allow setting a fractional temp ie whole number target setting 1,2 21C for example while the stc1000 will alow you to set a target temp with decimal places ie 18.3C

And you cant set a probe offset to account for any error testing your probes reading reveals.

Tho u wont need to lookup the manual every time u want to change a setting its very simple to use.
ist update for months n months..

Good info, and I like where you put your heater...just about to find somewhere for mine to go and assumed on the deck is the only place.
