What's this made of??

Post by floydmeddler » Mon Mar 02, 2015 11:24 pm

Hey folks,

Looking into building a new mash tun. What type of plastic do you reckon these barrels are made of?

Cheers

I'm hoping this one is HDPE too. Have asked the seller.

But don't you need to make sure it's food safe as well?

I'D say HDPE,
and HDPE is food safe, but having said this some of the colouring used in plastics can leach,
I have a friend, health and safety is his game, he's says one day to me, never use yellow gas pipe for water cos you will poison yourself.

I'll be back, after I look at the ebay listing again

Edit: they look the same as what I got but bigger from a place where I used to work. Which had morphine in it. And it's HDPE with the triangle with the knife and fork in it.. So I think your be fine.

Agree with wonkydonkey. All the blue containers at work are HD polyethylene and are stamped with the 2 recycling mark.

I think there are a few wooden clad vessels on JBK
eg
My New Steel Timber Clad Brewery

If you're using plastic vessels the cladding is likely to take some strain from relatively floppy hot plastic, so maybe an idea to add metal bands to the cladding
