Hi all
So before the weather gets too nice and screws up my brews with high fermentation temps I want to build a fermentation fridge.
Most of the 2nd hand fridges I have seen have the step at the back so I don't think my fermentation bucket would fit.
I have found one without this step at the back but it has the small freezer compartment at the top. So my question is this, can you convert this type of fridge as you would one without the freezer compartment ?

The step at the back shouldn't be a problem, both of mine have that and I can fit a bucket in with no problems - the step also gives you a place to put the tube heater.
If in doubt, contact the sellers and ask them to measure the insides - I did that when I bought my first one.

One of mine is pretty small (or certainly a lot smaller than my other one) and it still easily fits the bin in with the airlock on toptuffty22 wrote:Cheers Dev

the freezer compartment may have cooling pipes running through its structure and if so will be tricky to move/bend out of the way without creating a leak, it has been done but afaik way more failures than successes..
fwiw my brewfridge is too small for a bucket even tho its a cubic interior without the hump, so i simply switched to using FV's that would fit in, the 30l 4"neck wine fermentor just slips in and 25l jerrycans work a treat..
if you do need a new FV the bucket can always be used for bottling

A typical under-counter larder fridge (i.e. one without an ice box, but with a step underneath - because the works have to go somewhere!) is usually big enough for a fermenter.
I just put a wooden platform at the bottom of mine to straddle the step (heater fits underneath it) and I can get my 27 litre fermenter in there no bother.

If you can source a free fridge then buy a new FV that fits it.
That said I picked up one with no step and an ice compartment as you state and found my 25l FV, with a 4" neck fitted in just fine once I trimmed about half an inch of the top of it!
