Dead Auber PID?

Right when I thought I'd get a peaceful and problem free brewday last week it turned out a bit more complicated than expected! Filled the HLT with liquor and treated it as required and came to switch on PID and nothing, nadda, zip. No lights on the front or anything so I thought fuse, checked, replaced and still nothing. Maybe a loose wire inside so out comes the multimeter and nope that's fine, 230v right up to the inputs to the PID and all fine to the SSR.

Took the PID out and refreshed all connectors, unplugged the PT100 and SSR and tried firing it up again but still nothing. This little PID has seen me through 5 or 6 brews so far so it hasn't really had a tough life.. Any suggestions?!

It's about 4+ years old so I don't suspect I'll get any joy from Auber support themselves so i'm resigning myself to buying a new PID but just thought I'd check and see if anyone else had similar issues?

I would email Auber customer service detailing the use your pid has had since new and ask their advice on avoiding failure again if you again opt to buy a top shelf product and not a far east knock off.

try not to take the piss and it may turn up trumps Some companies do still trade on quality and good customer service.

also include a link to this thread to show that this problem has grass root interest, and that the auber pids are currently at least considered top contenders for the job by brewers..

The only issue I had with a syl1512 was when I put 240 volts across the 8 volt ssr out . . . Although the one I have controlling the heating on my viv is behaving oddly since I had to turn the circuit off yesterday . . . But I think that's a dodgy other joint somewhere

Yeah I just thought it odd to work perfectly 5 or 6 times in anger and then after about 6 weeks of no use it suddenly dies. Didn't even fire up then die just never turned on!

Have fired off an email to Auber so will await a response from them.

Incidentally, anyone got a spare PID for sale in the meantime??

Well a fairly quick response from Auber sealed the fate for my little PID. They offered a reasonable repair cost or is it's too much to repair then they'd offer 15% off a new one. However with shipping costs to the US running at about £10-12 the savings are definitely outweighed by the costs in this instance. He has offered me a like for like replacement for $41 including shipping which works out at todays rate just under £30 which is a bargain all things considered.

Not the best possible result, but not a bad one either, if i were u i would be gnawing at his elbow having bitten off the forearm
