Cheap long lead thermometers

Post by sbond10 » Wed Jun 24, 2015 6:03 pm

Been looking at these
http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm/171661217516?nav=SEARCH

It will litrally be used to plonk in at mash stage (I'm biab)
Then fed thru the insulation and kept outside so I can monitor temp lost.
The main questions would be is there anything cheaper with at least a metre of cable.
and the next question would be do I really one I have glass thermometers and a food probe type one. Should I get to temp mash in measure temp then wrap like buggery(foil lined bubble wrap l, double duvet, heavy couch throw) then monitor temp at end.

Any advice is greatly received

Try
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/0-2-Class-A-P ... 3a83dd84da

And

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Thermocouple- ... 20e93b8734 don't use the K Thermocouple.

You can extend the cable as needed, I do recirculating BIAB to maintain temperature so I can't comment beyond that.

Aamcle - how easy is it to put those 2 together, is any fiddling with programs needed or is it plug-in-and-play?

I'm not sure how you'd use that for brewing as it says ' Relay output: contact capacity 250V AC 3A (resistive load) '

I use a Sestos PID which triggers an SSR, which controls the power to an element.

It's easy enough although I may have posted
the wrong PID you want one with a SSR output. But even that doesn't matter if your only going to use it as a thermometer.

This one is better http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Dual-Digital- ... 3f4e2cbfd2 it even comes with a SSR.

Attaching the probe to the PID is easy it goes onto screw terminals then all you do is select pt100 in the menu.

The PID controls the SSR which switches the higher current for the heater on and off.

There is plenty of information on the net about how to build up a simple controller.

I thought most of those rex clones could only use a k-type. Certainly mine does. Only my sesto will handle a pt100. And a fake 40a ssr might not handle 40 amps...

I have a control box built around a PT100 a N2006P (PID) and a SSR, all as cheap as chips from the bay.

It works, it does what it's supposed to there's not much else to say about it …

I just don't understand why I'd I need a 40 amp ssr (no idea what they are) all I'm doing is plopping it in the boiler oh where at 71 degrees turn off gas mash in lid on insulation on then ibcab watch temp loss over 90 minutes and if its too bad remove insulation apply more heat etc.
I'm still undecided if I actually need this at this stage

You can use a pt100 probe and PID as a thermometer but it seems like an awful waste if you don't brew with electric (no upgrade potential ;p)

Edit: although this is a pretty cheap way of getting an accurate temp reading, but you'll need a project box and some cables too

I don't have any experience with a long lead thermometer but I do have a comark dt400 which has great build quality and good accuracy, expect their other thermometers will be as good.

Another option if you think you'll ever build / need a temperature controlled fermentation fridge is the stc1000 which you would have to do a little diy to.

It really ain't so difficult. Probe comes with connectors which you just screw onto PID terminals. Then use a spare power lead with plug, chop off the kettle/pc end, strip the live and neutral and screw those onto PID. For mounting in a box you cut the appropriate size of square out and use the mount the PID comes with. Small hole for power cable at back and another for probe on front. Done :)

Yea but knowing my history of diy I'd buy the wrong pid or sensor plus it would need calibrating. Plus the one I linked too is all prebuilt. And what happened to the heat sink and ssr
