Auto Fill HLT

Post by rsw » Thu Aug 27, 2015 12:21 pm

Hi,

Just wondering if anyone has built a HLT with Auto fill / level?

At the moment I either end up standing around for ages waiting for it to fill, or going back and forth to check on it. With 2 kids around it would make life easier if I could turn a tap on and the HLT would fill to a pre set level - and come back when convenient.

Just a thought at the moment, but looking for some ideas? (the simpler the better?)

You could use a system similar to a toilet. But obviously don't use one from a toilet!

I considered doing this for convenience reasons, but then thought about what happens when I start drawing water off into the MT, presumably it refills and the cold fill then cools down the hot water for the mash. That was where I gave up thinking about it!
I'm sure it is completely solvable but I just haven't got around to it yet!
Good luck, and if you do it please post all the details!
Cheers

ball valve inside the hlt at the top level and a 1/2 lever valve on the cold feed as the master on/off

You'd need a PID or STC controlled HERMS or RIMS (best in this situation I think) system with recirculation too the minimise the thermal shock of adding cold water to the HLT too.

That should work fine, simple but effective.
