Fermenting Fridge Build Questions?

Post by windrider » Wed Sep 02, 2015 11:27 am

Finally got myself a fermenting fridge after SWMBO said I could locate it in our spare room. Got a commercial fridge from work for free (shiny shiny) and I’ve got a temp controller and 60W heater arriving. Got a couple of questions with regards to the build?

1) Run the cable of the heater through the evaporation hole? I’m guessing there shouldn’t be too much condensation which will need to drain.
2) Screw the bracket of the heater to the fridge base or leave loose?
3) Is it worth building a stand for the fermentor to sit on or will the shelves support the weight okay…they seem quite sturdy.
4) Where should I run the temp probe? Was thinking just behind the door seals.

Moved the fridge in to place and it looked a bit bigger than I was expecting  It’s not the quietest of units but does get down to temperature very quickly. I’m hoping the fridge will only get switched on by the controller a few times a day so shouldn’t be that intrusive with the noise?

Ooh that looks nice.

1) Run the cable of the heater through the evaporation hole? Yes no probs at all.
2) Screw the bracket of the heater to the fridge base or leave loose? Leave loose for cleaning in case of spills etc.
3) Is it worth building a stand for the fermentor to sit on or will the shelves support the weight okay…they seem quite sturdy. Those look more than adequate.
4) Where should I run the temp probe? Was thinking just behind the door seals. That works for me and is easy to remove.

Nice fridge!

I would make a new shelf though. A full fermenter is surprisingly heavy ;-)

As above just run the heater cable through the condensation drain hole.

Those shelves look a lot stronger than the ones in a domestic fridge. However, I would still probably make some kind of stand.

I just run the temperature cable through the door seals and then attach it to the FV with blu-tack, works for me.

All sounds fine to me but I would also recommend fitting a 12v computer fan to improve temperature equalisation.
