Dead space

Post by Secla » Sat Sep 19, 2015 5:49 pm

This is the design of my hlt

Image

I have just measured dead space and when the taps finished and its sitting level the dead space is a massive 3.4l
Now this isn't such a problem with the hlt as I can account for it but I was planning the same design for my boiler and I really dont want to be losing 3.4l of wort

Any ideas what I can do to reduce dead space in the boiler ?

Hi Secla,
I would suggest it will have a lot to do with your hop filter. If you can set up your hop filter so that it is as close to the bottom of your boiler as possible and use some silicone tubing to draw off the wort, you should get a siphon effect which will reduce your losses to virtually zero.

I have a braided filter that wraps around the bottom and a pump but I'm not sure the pump will like sucking in air to much

I am currently building an all grain system and am confused. Why would you need a filter in your HLT if its only to boil water for the mashtun?

You should be okay if you are pumping the wort out of the boiler. I assumed you were using gravity to transfer.
