Holes, slits or mesh?

Post by Rad » Thu Oct 08, 2015 3:47 pm

Hi, I'll be converting a pot into malt pipe for Grainfather like build. I haven't decided what type of false bottom it'll be.

Which one would you recommend and why?
What size should the holes and slits be, or what gauge mesh to use?

Other than, holes and slits will be cheap but a lot of work, mesh will be quick but more expensive, I have no bias. Commercial systems seem to prefer mesh but I've read few posts about stuck mash using mesh.

PS: by holes I mean round, drilled holes :)

I've used mesh, some I bought new some I got from a scrap metal merchant.

It's fairly easy if a bit painful to work with and does a good job. Size I've used #20 and #15 mesh both work so choice depends on what you can get.
To support it I'm using 12mm polypropylene but I have used 6mm again it depends on availability or price. It's a joy to work with compares to SS!

My current build is a 1/2 size GF to do 10 + 12litre batches, have you seen:-

You can get a stuck mash with any of them.

I've seen that. The slits look great too. If I get it right you use slitted false bottom and mesh on top? Or do you have two mesh discs?

PS: My goal is actually the opposite. I want to build GF like construct but for doing double batches :D

Two disks just like the GF, if I remember I'll add a picture tomorrow.
