Fitting a 50 litre fermenter into under counter fridge

I have been given an under the counter fridge which I would like to use to ferment in. I can fit a standard 30 litre bucket in there no problem but there is not enough height to fit a 50 or 60 litre container. Is there any way of moving the compressor so the shelf can be taken out to give more room in the fridge? Has anyone taken the top off a fridge to extend the height? Should I forget about getting a 50 litre bucket in there and just look for a taller fridge?
