K Thermocoupler Probe ranges ?? What to buy

Post by Buster » Tue Dec 29, 2015 3:03 pm

I am looking to buy 2 x K Thermocoupler Probes but I am not sure if the range is important. I wish to use it with both a Sestos Pid and Rex C100. The ones I am looking at have the range of -100 to +1000c , are these ok or do I have to buy them within a certain range like 0 to 400c

There are different type of thermocouples. The "K" type describes the shape of the curve between temperature and the voltage produced. The "K" type thermocouple has a given curve. The other letter thermocouples are better / worse suited for measuring higher or lower temperatures. So basically a K thermocouple is a K thermocouple. If the device itself will survive lower / higher than you need it's not a problem.

I was under the impression a pt100 RTD probe is more accurate than a thermocouple

Absolutely right chris2012, I read an article this afternoon about Pids, Probes and the like from a a brewing point of view and all agree that for lower temps (0~200c) the resistance type PT100 probe is deadly accurate as its not affected by any ambient temperature from the PID itself or even the daily temperature difference as the "K" Thermocouple is. Some say it can be as much as 2-3'c which is not good for your Mash. This is the article I refer to-->> http://aussiehomebrewer.com/blog/166/en ... r-brewing/

Pt100 is favourite. Issue is some rex units only work with K type. One good reason to go straight to a sesto. Some rex units can be modified to use a pt100 but not others.
