Hi all,
Happy Christmas n' all that and hope everyone has a great new year.
I bought a new rotokeg a little while back and during my last brew I noticed it didn't hold pressure all that well and I had to keep topping it up with CO2. I put this down to negligence on my behalf in not checking the tightness of the seals etc before I used it.
Anyway 2nd time around, I have tightened the lid really well, lubed the o ring and threads wih Vaseline, tightened up the circlip / nut that holds the CO2 valve / pressure relief assy and tightened up the tap nut really well. All without over tightening and distorting as best I could.
I added a brew and after a few days secondary fermenting there was no pressure. I added a blast of CO2 and the beer came out ok but then another day and nothing. I have since learnt the gas seems to be escaping through the tap, even though this is fully closed along with some beer. About half a litre per day.
Is there anything I can do in the interim? Will the beer be ok or will it go off??
I will buy and fit a new tap but this means opening the lid and exposing to O2.
My other rotokeg is absolutely fine hence the reason I bought a second.
Could I seal the tap up in any way till secondary ferment and cold crash / clearing is done and I can neck the beer.
It's a shame because I was looking forward to this brupak IPA.
Thanks

Re: Rotokeg pressure issue
you could try a good wrap of ptfe tape around the neck thread top cm or so. @50p a roll its not gonna add much to the cost of a brew even if you wrap a roll round the neck

ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager
Drinking: dry one minikeg left in the store
Coming Soon Lots planned for the near future nowt for the immediate

Re: Rotokeg pressure issue
It's not the thread it's leaking through, it's the actual tap, it's not fully sealing when closed.
Can I remove the lid, fit a new tap and then give a blast of CO2 without over exposing the beer to oxygen?

Re: Rotokeg pressure issue
yes a quick fix should be ok
co2 is laying above the beer protecting it from o2 so pul the lid lay a clean plate over the top to guard against airborne dust dripping in following with a quickish re-capping and a c02 blast shouldnt be any risk to the beer
