Budget barrel,narrowed it down.

Post by wanus » Wed Jan 13, 2016 8:17 pm

I`ve been brewing kits for a few year now then bottling and barrelling my brews.I`ve been using two wilko budget barrels with 50-50 results on natural carbonation and now I know why :!: My last brew of an IPA was left to mature 5 week b4 I tapped it.When I did it was flat as a fart so I switched the plain cap with a co2 cap and charged it.I instantly heard a small hissing from a pinhole sized hole below the collar on a moulded join.I transferred the brew to my other barrel and charged it again and poured a pint to sample. It tasted good with a slight twang I don't normally get in my brews and it retained a decent head. Will this small hole have had any undesirable results other than the twang I mentioned.Thanx in advance for any replies.

The only problem you might of had is with oxidation that's probably the twang.
No harm done if it's drinkable but it might get worse putting co2 will hopefully of stopped it oxidising further.

A bit unlucky with a pin hole you'd of hoped the priming co2 would of been enough pressure to keep oxygen out.

I only had a few pints from it upto now.The thing is I don`t` wanna drink a skinful how I sometimes do come the weekend then wake up with the headache from hell. Like I say it tastes ok apart from the slight after twang so I`ll take my chances  Seems a crime to waste it by draining it.
