Tall and narrow fermenters

Post by Rad » Thu Feb 18, 2016 6:31 pm

I recently acquired an under counter catering fridge. Well, it's BIG. I'm going to use is as a fermentation chamber. It can accommodate 60l fermenter from Speidel. The trouble is that I brew 25l batches not 50, and 2 buckets or carboys won't fit inside. The internal dimensions are 50cm x 59cm z 63cm (DxWxH).

From what I worked out I could fit 2 fermenters with the diameter of up to 32cm. So far I've found 2 options. One is the SS Brew Bucket. At 26l capacity, they are small and expensive, and difficult to get in UK.

Option 2 are these. Still expensive but the size is perfect. The design worries me. I don’t like the ridge between the bottom and the wall. No idea how easy to clean and service is the tap nor if the seal on top is any good.

I'm hopping someone here may come up with a 3rd option. I don't mind plastic if it's cheap. If I go for stainless it has to be for life. Can anyone recommend fermenters up to 32cm wide and 60cm high?

EDIT:
There are some great options down the line so I thought it'd be a good idea to summarise all the options so far:

First two points are up for discussion but the latter isn't true the Malt Miller has them.

Your other option is fine but you would be wise to change the tap, which brings it close to the SS if not in capacity.

Would two of these fit:

I would imagine put in on a diagonal they'd fit. May be wrong.... but they're 32cm diameter which is what you stated...Or are you wanting shiny shiny :D

You say your diameter/width is 59 so 2 x 32 won't fit if that's true or have I missed something?

The bottom is 59x50, the diagonal is about 77cm so 2 32s should just about fit. Those buckets look ok, if only they were closer to 30l. As for shiny, I like shiny :D but at the price (and I'd need 3), they would have to steel my heart ;)

Malt Miller is about the only place in UK (other than amazon) that even lists them. They're out of stock (and out of budged for now).

So I've just spent the last 30 minutes trying to work out an equation to describe the maximum diameter of touching intersecting circles on a diagonal that would fit wihin a space 59cm*50cm. Turns out I'm worse at maths than I thought.
So I first up inkspace and drafted a nice square 500*590 pixels and filled it with circles which I stretched to size.
32cm isn't going to work. 30cm will be a tight squeeze.
Of course you could get fancy and have one on a raised plinth so the widest point (the top surface) sits slightly above the rim of the other one. But that'd be getting a bit silly.

30cm diameter max!

Two of these would fit- you might have to have a right angle attachment for a blow off tube rather than a bubbler. Still only 5G.

You could even fit these at a pinch

which are 27.5L

Bow before my MS Paint skills  I've rounded down the size a bit too. According to the manufacturer it's actually 501.6mm x 596.9mm

Aha. Yes, just redrew it with those larger measurements. 32cm will work (just!). Let's hope the internal dimensions are accurate ;)

As soon as I've cleared enough stuff from my garage to open its doors I'll know for sure

after building a fermenting fridge too small for my brew bucket (DOH!) i had to look at a similar problem, i shifted to fermenting in jerrycans just like the nochill chaps use,, the only drawback comes when cleaning and rinsing as they are a bugger to drain empty, but the footprint of a couple of 25l (closer to 30l really) jerrycans could fit in the space nicely perhaps?
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt
Maturing: Challenger smash, and a kit lager
Drinking: dry one minikeg left in the store
Coming Soon Lots planned for the near future nowt for the immediate :(

Fil: do you mean something like these?. I can see why they are a pain to wash. Is the surface on the inside smooth? Are the walls strong enough for bucket tap?

On the bright side, if I lay them on the side I could fit 4 in and still have space for the heater ;)

Could you ferment in kegs?

No idea how much they are even if you can find them individually or how much of a faff it might be :)
