Buffalo 3K Induction Hob

Post by Halfacrem » Wed Mar 16, 2016 11:19 am

My new Induction bob arrived from Nisbets yesterday, and my new 10 USG Brew Kettle is coming within the next hour or so :)

I've read that only certain metals work on induction hobs, and one way to test if a pan will work is to put a magnet to it and if it stuck, then it would work! I tried this with my el cheapo Buckingham 19l pot and as the magnet slid off, I'd thought I'd have to consign it to the back of the garage!

I unpacked the hob this morning and thought I'd just give the old pot a go and, lo and behold it works!! I've just completed a trial boil, and it took 16 litres of 14c tap water up to strike temp (75C) in 23 minutes and up to a rolling boil in 37. That's a huge improvement on my stove gas ring! I reckon the SS kettle will beat that, but I'm really pleased the old kettle can still be used as I can experiment with split wort batches without having to buy a new pan.

Here's a piccy with the old pan on board!

Pots often have different metals on the base compared to the sides.

Yes, that could be the case, though this pot is so cheap and flimsy...anyway, it's good news :D

Here's the SS brew kettle on the hob. Note the port on the top right. I wasn't expecting that, but I think they must be getting shipped with them now.

Nice one! I think they are a perfect match for each other - really nice bits of kit, and a pleasure to brew on.
I believe that top port is for a whirlpool, or recirculating during BIAB if that's your thing.

I'm really looking forward to brewing with them! I like the fact it gives me plenty of options, kitchen, garden or garage brewing, my usual 11.5 litre batches or something a lot bigger, potentially, plus split batches now I've got two brew pots! Plenty of justification going on :D

I'm hoping some of that might help me to explain the purchase to Mrs Halfacrem :-k
