Bucket for HLT

Post by Tippler » Wed Mar 23, 2016 9:23 pm

As soon as I get some spare time I'm going to have a bash at putting together a new HLT to replace my ageing Electrim one. I usually get everything from the Malt Miller as he's very reliable and ships to France for a reasonable price, so is there anyone who has used one of his plastic fermenters as a boiler or HLT? The sort of thing I'm looking at is thishttp://www.themaltmiller.co.uk/index.ph ... ductId=609 or this http://www.themaltmiller.co.uk/index.ph ... ductId=796.

The 60L one looks exactly like the one I have used with no problems as a boiler and I also used the 33L version of the same bucket which does not look the same as the 33L one in the link so I can't say if its the same or not. I would ask malt miller if they think its suitable.

FWIW I got some of the malt millers 60L buckets recently; they are Polypropylene (which is considerably better with heat than HDPE) so they could be suitable. Copperkettle make boilers out of eurobuckets that look very similar, so I'd be surprised if they weren't at least up to HLT use. That said, I'm only using them as fermenters so can't comment from personal experience of boiling/heating in them, maybe other can.

You could also consider the malt miller's stainless 70L stock pot. There are also 50L and 33L versions if you wanted smaller, IIRC he does/did a hole cutting service too. IMO they make excellent value boilers so would easily work as HLTs. At one time, homebrewers could buy these Bergland stock pots from French (or german) ebay and import them but the seller stopped that, not sure if they still sell within France though.
