Hot water supply to HLT
I'm working on setting up a 100Ltr 3 vessel setup and while setting them up with my dad's help, he asked why i am not taking the water feed for HLT from the Hot water system (Combi/condesner boiler) to save having to heat the volume of water i am going to need.
I tried to explain that it is simply not done but then could not take the argument further.
Can anyone advise? I can understand that it is not a good idea to use hot water from a hot water tank but is there any reason to not use hot water coming less than 5 meters from the combi bolier? My HLT has a single 3KW element in it so i am thinking the hot water supply would certainly speed up strike temperature.

As long as it's a sealed combi boiler then your fine ie it never sits in a giant tank in your attic. It comes in as cold and goes out within 3 second as hot.
It's what I do and have done for all 7 of my brews. Numberous people do it

Yup, I don't see a problem with it if it's straight from the mains water supply and the alternative is heating cold water from the same source in the HLT.
The situation might be different if you want to do water treatment or put the water through a filter first. I suspect my water filter is not intended to be used with hot water.

When I asked about adding water treatment at 50-60 degrees. The general opinion was it would be ok. I add Camden tabs at this temp anywayJamesF wrote:Yup, I don't see a problem with it if it's straight from the mains water supply and the alternative is heating cold water from the same source in the HLT.

Same here. Turning the boiler up to its top setting and getting water from there saves me a good half an hour or more on brew day.
Just use cold or cooled water if you're going to check the alkalinity.

Re: Hot water supply to HLT
All the hot water from my combi boiler has gone through a water softener, so I wouldn't want to use this for brewing.
I fill my HLT with cold (unsoftened) water the night before a brew, then use a timer to switch it on about 4.00am when the electricity is cheap. The HLT has a thermostat which keeps the water at about 80C.
My water treatment regime is one recommended by Murphy & Son and based on their analysis of my unsoftened cold water supply.

If you don't care about water treatment and are only interested in the relatively small savings on heating costs then fine, discussion over. However, if you do then your starting point needs to be to know what is in your water to begin with and what happens to it after it has gone through the boiler, you can then make some sensible decisions on how to treat it after that.
