Silicone tube in the boiler

Post by JonA » Sun May 29, 2016 11:32 am

I have a bottom drain boiler with a s/s mesh hop strainer that sits on the bottom. It has the sides folded in all round so it's like an upturned square tray.

It works pretty well but it tends to slide about a bit during the boil, and when moving the boiler and hops can get in underneath. I was going to get some small bore silicone tubing, slice it open and push it on to the edges of the hop strainer to give it a better seal on the bottom and also provide some friction to stop it sliding.

My question - is it ok to have silicone tubing in the boiler exposed to high temperatures, I obviously don't want to use anything that will decompose or give off anything nasty!

Thanks for any information or ideas.

food grade and high temperature stable silicone is available so you should be ok with that grade

Silicone is great in the boiler. So no worries there.

My bazooka hop filter sits on the bottom of my boiler, attached to the tap by copper fittings in an "S" shape and made airtight for a syphon effect by bits of silicone tube.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

That's great, thanks a lot guys for the reassurance. That Polymax site have some interesting stuff, I was looking at their tubing and noticed that they sell silicone edge strip which is exactly what I want without having to cut open the tube. So that's a result for me - cheers weetabixface

Yeah I think it is pretty indestructible. I have pressure cooked mine on a gas hob in the past, with no perceived ill effects (poor man's autoclave).

I use exactly that around the edges of my false bottoms.
