Display or glass front fridges

Post by dean_wales » Tue Aug 09, 2016 8:03 am

Hi guys,

I need to rethink my chilling and fermenting fridge setup because my charcuterie hobby is competing for space.

Any suggestions as to how and where I might get one would be very welcome. eBay - doesn't seem to be coming up with anything that isn't either completely broken or really expensive!

Sounds silly but has anyone fitted an old double glazing pane into a normal fridge door?

Dean.

I find gumtree good for local bargains.

A carefully crafted eBay 'followed' search that emails you with new postings is probably the best bet. I was looking for something similar, but in the end got a stainless LEC commercial fridge for £21 . Your other alternative is to look for closing down shops/pubs, but they are probably wise to the returns from eBay these days.

Fitting double glazing to a fridge door sounds complicated to me, as glazed fridge doors tend to be the whole unit, not an insert.

This, and local free ads such as the Friday-Ad turn up gold quite often - Ebay is pretty much a waste of time as it's full of high price chancers selling their wares and idiot buyers who'll pay nearly retail just to f**k you over in the last 3 seconds of the auction; cant remember the last time I "bid" for anything on there - I use it more like Amazon, just an online "General Store" where I find what I want and hit buy-it-now or haggle directly with the seller.

Also worth asking in local shops or takeaways - they might just have a redundant unit out back they could sell to you.

I have been thinking of doing this as I saved 2 double glazed units out of small windows. Idea was to use 2 small larder fridges. Can't really see any problem with it but I have taken cold feet.

I would also be interested to know if anyone has tried it.

I'm not sure whether fridge glass is tempered, but that would be my main concern with replacing with a standard double glazed unit.

Im sure if your patient that the ideal doner fridge will appear on ebay, gumtree or freecycle eventually.

If you get a glass doored fridge its worthwhile making a curtain from soft camping matt or bubblewrap to cover the galss and add a bit of insulation when not being peered through..
ist update for months n months..
Fermnting: not a lot..
Conditioning: nowt

Thanks for the input guys.

TBH aI'm thinking more and more about the fitting of glass to a fridge. I have done it with computer cases!

It's figuring out the seal/surround that will be a pain...
