Replacing the tap on my electrim boiler

Post by Jimothy » Thu Nov 17, 2016 1:46 pm

Hi,

I have been lurking on the forum for a good few years but never registered, so now done! I have an Electrim boiler, but the tap is not the greatest. I have seen a number of posts where people have used a manual ball valve tap to replace the plastic taps on their mash tuns and boilers. These look a lot more robust so i think I will do the same, but everywhere I look online are either massively expensive or out of stock.

So my questions is where do most people buy their plumbing bits from? (Copper tube, pipe, elbows). I also might have to go down the CFC route I didn't realise how simple they are to build...

(just a side question, how do you add a signature? I can't work out how to do it, I think I'm being dim)

Hi, and welcome to Jim's. You're not being dim, we've all needed help when first we joined.

You can get ball valves from most of the on-line Home Brew Shops, such as The Malt Miller or Brew UK. The 2 piece ones, (which are fine) are around a tenner or so. Just make sure the hole in your boiler is the right size to take one. They are half inch BSP, but that doesn't exactly equate to the diameter of the fitting. If in doubt measure the diameter on your boiler and email the supplier. I think they are about 22mm but check to make sure. Maybe someone who knows for sure will come along soon. If the hole on your boiler is smaller then obviously you will need to ream it out a bit.

As for your signature, click on User Control Panel at the top of the page, click on the 'Profile' tab and selectct, 'Edit Signature' on the left.
Best wishes

Dave

Hi Dave,

Thanks for the reply, I'll have a look on those sites. It's very easy to get carried away with the equipment and buy a whole new boiler just for the tap, I'm not tight or anything but the boiler I have does the job really well and it's a shame to ditch it when for minimal outlay I can modify it to give lots of years good service.

I love the community spirit on this site and all the great advice on offer! I know it has been documented well before in other posts but I might put some pics up on my boiler modification :)

Thanks for the heads up with the signature

My user Control Panel doesn't have the option to Edit Signature. Maybe I haven't posted enough to get that option...

When I needed a few stainless bits pipework suppliers were good, a bit cheaper to buy from their web site than their ebay store. They do copper but I've no idea if those prices are competitive.
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

BES are excellent too though the well known UK brewing suppliers have better stainless steel fittings from China now.
