Mash temp probe position

Post by D4V33 » Fri May 01, 2020 10:21 pm

Hi all, just wondering what you think the best position is for fitting a thermowell for monitoring the temp in my Mash tun?

Temp will be controlled via a PID which will read temps in my HLT with HERMS coil. The HLT temp will be set a bit higher than wanted to compensate for heat loss through the tubes on its way to the Mash tun and adjusted accordingly.

To get the most accurate Mash temp reading where do you locate your temp sensor?

Cheers
Dave

Checkout this post by PeeBee -> RIMS and HERMS temperature sensor position; hopefully it will answer your question. TL;DR you might want to look into putting the probe in a t-piece, on the return into the mash tun from the HERMS coil.

I have one in the loop and one 1/3 of the way up in the tun.

One for control, one for indication.
