Syphon tube

Post by soupdragon » Sat Jul 03, 2021 3:57 pm

Hi All

I think it's time to get some new tubing. So, what are the benefits of silicone tube over my existing pvc? My old stuff has got rather stained and although it doesn't seem so be causing any issues I think the time has come to get some new stuff.

Thoughts?

Cheers Tom

I like silicon because I can throw it in the pressure cooker and know nothing is left alive, so I use it’s in preference to PVC for transfer tubing.
It’s oxygen permeable though so not suitable for replacing beer line.
Also make sure to get the food safe stuff.

Does it collapse when bent? I'm thinking about when it's attached to the bucket clip and bends over the top of the bucket

Tom. For syphoning use pvc syphon tube. Cheap, works and all the bits you ever need will fit it.

Platinum cured Silicone tube is great for special applications.

Running alcohol through tubes makes sure they are hygienic. A quick squirt of truck wash (TFR) and a good rinse get pvc tube clean. Cleaner than you thought it was dirty.

Tbh do you need to replace it? Most of mine are at least 10+ years into service. No plans to change.

I guess that depends on the wall thickness, it is quite variable depending upon what you get. If I ever have to siphon I tend to use a cane for that bit.

I was thinking more about the bit attached to the tip of the cane as it bends down over the top of the bucket. It's not expensive so I'll get some when I next order some bits/grain

It is a bit floppier generally, but like f00b4r said that depends on the wall thickness.

I have a lump from Malt Miller for chilling (hot side) and pumping (more flexible). But for syphoning I wouldn't.

If ever I need to bend silicone tubing through 180 degrees I feed it through a 'U' bend bit of plumber's piping.

Works a treat and makes it easy to hook the tubing onto the edge of a bucket or whatever you want!

I'm thinking out loud now but wouldn't it still collapse inside the u bend? Like your thinking though 😎

Never has done for me. A U bend is quite a gentle bend, really.

PVC tubing might kink, though. Silicone is always my tubing of choice.

Try it!

You can also rob the waste pipe support of the washer... SWMBO will never notice.

This bit...

Excuse my stupidity but how would something like that stay in place with me using a bucket clip? Obviously it would or the suggestion wouldn't be made but I can't picture it as the rigid pipe currently runs through the lower part of the clip inside the bucket then the tube bends over the top of that. The only way I can imagine would be not to use the clip, but what would then hold the rigid pipe in place inside the bucket?
Told you I was a bit thick 🥺

ouch..this is making my mind bleed :D

If you are using bucket clips just use 2 (one In - one out) - that stops the problem of the siphon tube collapsing when bent over the lip.

Two clips? Now I'm confused 😆
I just use one of these

By eck, that's a big picture. Been a while since I've attached one, forgotten how big they could look.

Anyway the tube just bends over the top of this. Hope that's eased your pain?

Cheers Tom
