I like what Youtuber Martin / Homebrew Challenge has done. Inline fan and a striped out hood. Check out his vid from around 8 mins. Tidy!

Perhaps I could make a decent size hood with ply and even have 2 inline fans running...

This is your decision point and also your price point.

A close coupled (sit on top) hood is moving a much smaller ammount of air to get the steam away. So you can use a smaller, cheaper fan.
I have considered a permanent installation of one of these with a riser to lift it away when not in use.

A cooker type hood (like youtube) which is further away either above or beside the boiler, will need a much bigger & more expensive fan because it is moving a lot more air to be as efficient. And they tend to drip in cold garages. Close coupled is imo much much better.

My kettle is 38cm.
Brilliant it fits.
If the wok lid & hose in the picture is of use to you, you can have it as a gift. Pm me your address and I will pop it in the post.
Like I mentioned earlier I made another with blow holes.

You, sir, are a kind soul! Thank you for the offer. I've decided to go for the hood option, though. All makes sense what you say with regards to needing a bigger fan. That's fine. My biggest expense worry was fitting one of those big jumbo fans. I only need a 6 inch hole max for the inline fan. I might go for 2 just to be on the safe side. Bathroom type it is!

Thanks again

Just a thought, don't put two fans inline. It does not work like that.

I was thinking 2 fans on 2 separate lines. That should be OK? Just worried one inline won't be strong enough. Maybe I'm wrong though. Would this work on its own do you reckon?

Maybe. But Imo is overkill.

Had you thought of going the whole hog and making a vented lid, so it won't boil over?

The plan is to have a ply hood above the kettle. Not going to go the lid route.

You could try a steam condenser.

Based on this thread, I switched to using a pedestal fan to push steam away from the grainfather, as I brew in a back room about 1m away from an outside door. Made a massive difference, and if I angle the fan down so it also blows on the wort it prevents boil over.

Have seen this method being used quite a lot. Seems very effective.

I ended up buying this:
