I've done my own brew calculator in MS Excel and Iv'e used

=IF(B1>1.2,B1+(0.000009*B2*B2+0.000235*B2-0.005475),IF(B1>1.099,B1+(0.000012*B2*B2+0.000016*B2-0.00288),B1+(0.00000359*B2*B2+0.00006971*B2-0.00151687)))

If you were to use the top left hand corner of Ms Excel, the 3 left boxes (A1,2 & 3)would read, from top to bottom, Hydrometer reading, Temperature and corrected gravity. To the right of them in boxes B1,2 & 3 you would have for example 1.044, 26C & the formula.

It would be worth checking it against another formula. It wouldn't be the first time I've gone wrong with Excel. [-o<

That's the formula that I recently started using. It seems to work well, although I have a 60F hydrometer, so have to adjust accordingly.

That got me thinking about my old hydrometer, which doesn't say whether it's for 60 F or 20 C (or if it did the markings are long gone). Anyway, re-calibrated it in 20 C water and got bang on 1000, so at least I know my ABV figures are accurate.

Was it 60 F in the past because that was considered room temperature in the days of no central heating and frost on the inside of the bedroom window?

How do I know what temp. my hydrometer is calibrated at??????

Do what I did above. Drop it in water at 20C and hope it reads 1000.
Should be distilled water but tap-water is good enough for government work.

Easier to use one of the temperature correction tables, like this or look here.

The above [70C corrected to 20C] would read 1.025.

I was surprised to see a discrepancy with the GW table in the back of BYO British Real Ale and the Brewzor App I had been using with settings adjusted for a 20C calibrated hydro. Only noticed this last night.

On this subject, has anyone got a pre-formatted 20c hydrometer correction table with Plus & Minus values for specific readings?

It's also in John Palmer's How To Brew but the correction only goes up to 49 c.

Being a bit new I've been looking for resources that give me a number of calculators in one place rather than having multiple URL's bookmarked. I haven't seen any one post this site but I think it is pretty good and offers a few things I haven't seen anywhere else either. The calorie counter showing how much you consume each pint was a little worrying :cry:

Anyone know if there is a max temp that can be corrected? Just that I took a reading of 1.028 at 66C which my calculator (BrewMate) gives 1.047 but when it was down to 20C I measured it at 1.040. Quite a difference?! I see some calculators don't go this high - perhaps for a reason?

P.S. I started a thread in the All Grain section before seeing this thread. Verdict seems to be to not expect accuracy particular at temperatures as high as this.
