Sweet lager from Corni Keg.

Post by richard_senior » Sun May 25, 2008 10:09 pm

Hello,

I got my first corni the other week, and when I opened it it smelt like it'd had pop in it last.. So I cleaned it thoroughly.. But I didn't gas it up.
I tasted my lager as I put it in the corni and it was dry... I added all about 150g of sugar and left it for 2 weeks in a fairly warm place.

When I hooked it up to the pump the lager was undrinkably sweet.
Is that my sugar, or is it that I failed to clean the syphon tube?

What should I do?

You might want to try replacing the o-rings on the posts and the lid. I have tried many times to boil/clean them to remove the soda smell but to no effect. You can pick up a replacement seals kit from Hop & Grape for about £3.

I have had a couple of brews go shandy-like towards the last few pints until I replaced the o-rings on my kegs.

Yup.. it's coke.
De-Gassed the Corni and syphoned off the lager back into a fermenter to pitch some yeast again. Had a quick taste. :)
Gonna leave it fermenting anyway but probably just throw it away when it's done :(
Perhaps we should have a Corni Keg FAQ which states clearly that you should clean the bloody syphon tube? Or was it a schoolboy error?
Don't know anyone who drinks larger and coke... never heard of it anyway.

I just got my keg through the post. Is the dip tube meant to be stuck in place going straight to the bottom of the keg - well slightly to the side... The keg was pressurised so i relased the gas and it did have a sweet smell so ill have to make sure its cleaned totally before adding beer :?

So you take the nut off, and the tube pushes out from inside?

DaaB wrote:Dip tubes can all be removed, try reaching in and pushing it out. If the keg smells of syrup i'd fill it with hot water and a 1/2 a cup or so of a cheap unscented oxycleaner and allow to soak for 15 mins (no more otherwise you can get crystal deposits on the keg and in the dip tube). I'd also check the seals, if they smell then i'd replace them. I have seal sets available for £2.40 ea if you need any.
Daab do you have any corny posts and poppets available?
