Infection from Property

Post by maxashton » Thu Jul 24, 2008 9:42 am

Hi folks,

I'm coming up on doing my first AG batch in my new house, and am a bit concerned. A couple of weeks ago i inadvertantly left some (relatively clean) dishes in soapy water in the sink overnight. When i came to make my breakky in the morning, i was horrified to find some kind of slime in place of the water.

I can only presume this is some kind of bacterial infection.

I've done it again a couple of nights ago and the exact same result occurred. Yeah ok, grubby goit not doing the cleaning etc etc.

If i leave a glass of water on the counter, things seem fine.

Should i be concerned about brewing in this possibly infectious environment?

Is there anything you can reccomend? Should i be doing a pro kitchen style protien wipedown with caustics etc?

The horror.

Unhygenically yours,

Max

Note: It's worth pointing out that i bleached the sink and everything that was in it heavily after my discovery.

Well, that's the thing! Fairy with antibacterial rubbish in it.
It was hot soapy water! The plain water in the glass on the counter had nowt wrong with it!

Bizzare.

Well, this is the pisser. I hose most of my prep surfaces down with quats becuase i use chicken quite heavily.

I wil have to start bleaching my sink a lot more often i suppose, dirty git i am.

I am just concerned that despite my sanitation procedures i am going to end up with a vat of sludge i'll need to drain into the sewers.

Hah!

I do use a closed airlocked fermenter. I love the bubbles!

if it is slimy then it could be a slime mould, which tend to form when you leave water that has been contaminated - e.g. that glass of water by the side of the bed! - for too long.
I seem to remember somewhere that Star San is effective against slime moulds.

HAHAHA same here their is nothing more relaxing than watching the airlock bubble away happily.... :D .... My wife thaught it was her stomach the other morning so went and got herself a rather large breakfast

Whatever it is, it must reproduce mighty fast @ room temperatures to leave a slime overnight!

Could it be something chemically reacting with the sink? Or is the "slimy layer" perhaps oils from the dodgy take-away the night before  (speaking from experience there!)

I bleached the whole kitchen a few days ago, and have been giving everything a bit of a blast with the old steam gun. It still slimes up pretty quickly, but not overnight unless there's food waste involved.

And yes, it converts all the water into slime, moraless.
It's denser at the bottom as you would expect. All the water is thick, and when you tip it out the (presumably slime mold) stuff at the bottom sort of dribbles out.

It's pretty revolting, but the brew is OK, and all is under control.

There used to be a guy on UKHomebrew who basically discovered he couldn't brew in his house as everything he made turned to something like Hoegaarden. When he moved out to his garage he had no problems.

That's one hell of a bizzare thing. Perhpas his missus was dumping coriander in it to try and put him off. :D

Most of my brews in the house tended to end up like Kindl  . . . . Which for me isn't a bad experience  . . . but it could be said to be an acquired taste :D

Moved out to the shed and patio and no major infections (Only caused by a lack of sanitation when casking)
