Post by Portisheaddan » Mon Jan 05, 2009 3:24 pm

How much thin bleach should I put in a washing up bowl to sanitise my bottles one by one? for larger chaps?
Any easy answers?

Want them clean... Dont wanna kill myself drinking it either!

in 25Litres water i have a 'good glug' - probably 1/4 pint.

do the sums from there - works fine, I don't rinse and there's no symptomatic faults evident!

Another alternative is to use a much lower qty of thin bleach and add this to the water, stir, and then add 10ml of distilled malt vinegar to the water . . . it makes for a more effective sanitiser and requires no rinsing

Under no circumstances add the vinegar to the bleach directly!!

I wish I could remember the qty of thin bleach to use . . . . IIRC its about 10 ml (of a 5% bleach) in 5US Gallons (18.9L)

I have this in my notes, though I've never used that method (I use videne):

http://www.irishcraftbrewer.com/communi ... .php?t=196
Add 1oz (30ml) of bleach, to 5 Gallons (19 litres) of water.
Add 1oz (30ml) of white vinegar to this. (Do not add the vinegar to the bleach first! Chlorine gas!)

Apparently this changes the pH so that the solution is a real killer.
He said a 30 second contact time is sufficient for sanitisation and that you don't need to rinse!
I brew therefore I ... I .... forget

I bought the thin bleach and white vinegar but never got around to using it.

I bought some videne instead.

Don't think the videne will run out anytime soon so it will be a while before I use it.

Thanks Vacant. . . . I rebuilt the PC over Christmas and had not moved all my bookmarks yet, so couldn't find the Basic Brewing Radio Link Where Charley Talley (Of Five star) describes using acidified bleach, the interview is about 10:40 into the podcast.
