StarSan and Brita Filters

Post by maxashton » Wed Jan 26, 2011 1:16 pm

Hi folks,

I've made an interesting observation with StarSan and Brita Maxtra cartridges.

I have pretty hard water (Kettering, Northants...), and can't mix StarSan with tap water due to the alkalinity compromising the solution.

I've never had much faith in Brita cartridges, due to previous discussions many years ago on this forum. However, I noticed that the new Brita "Maxtra" cartridges have an actual ion exchange media, similar to household water softening systems.

I happen to have a Maxtra jug (Hey, I like my tea to be see-through!), so I thought I'd test making up StarSan with that. It worked perfectly.

To be safe, I tend to add a half teaspoon or so of citric acid to the mix in absence of phosphoric acid.

Anyone else tried this?

I'm sticking to RO or tesco for the moment, myself, but it could save me money!
