Corny Keg Help - Which cleaner & sanitizer?

Post by ChrisA » Tue Oct 01, 2013 10:37 pm

I have recently purchased my first corney keg and am getting ready to make my first brew. After doing a bit of reading it seems as though a lot of people use two separate products to prep the keg. A cleaner and then sanitizer.

It seems as though Star San is a popular sanitizer for people in the US but I wondered what two products people in the UK were using? I had also read that although it might be popular it wasn’t best suited due to the acidic nature of the solution.

The only other sterilizer I have used on my bottles and plastic keg is VWP but have been warned not to use this because similar to Star San it could damage the stainless steel.

Can any experienced keggers let me know what they are using?

Cheers Chris

Hi Chris and welcome :)

Quite a few, myself included, use the cheap oxi cleaners and videne to sanitize.

I use Sodium Percarbonate, which is the active ingredient in the oxi cleaners, then after a rinse with water I give it a final flush through with starsan. I use 5 litre bottles of Tesco Ashbeck spring water (99p) to mix starsan with. You can reuse it loads of times.

Thanks guys :D

When you say a cheap oxy cleaners could you actually recommend a particular one you have used in the past?

I didn't know if there are any particular brands or types that are better than others or if I was best to just stick to the active ingredient that Steve suggested?

The stuff I use is not cheap unless you buy it in bulk, I had a 25kg sack delivered today, should last me a while.

Basically you want any oxi based cleaner, Aldi do it quite cheap, I think you can get it in pound land for less.
You will find it in the washing powder isle. Ideally you want one that has no perfume added.

I clean with oxy and then Star San, I would never be without it now.

The stuff from Poundland is a 500g tub but with 25% free so that's 625g for a quid :-) same stuff is available in the 99p store too.

I did notice the last tub I got from poundland has got a slight perfume aroma, not going to use it on brewing gear just hope it's just a one off and they haven't changed the formula.

Yes he does, but before that he said "surfactants",which are compounds that lower the surface tension between two liquids or between a liquid and a solid. Surfactants act as wetting agents. Therefore they increase the waters ability to do the job, they make the" water wetter". He's a victim of trying to make the science easier to understand, no more.

I've not noticed to be honest but I did stock up a while ago. Not bought any for at least 9 months. I'll check next time I use some.
