Tescos Ashbeck spring water...

Post by nigebeer » Tue Jun 02, 2015 12:15 pm

Hi,
I have been using Starsan together with Tescos Ashbeck spring water for a few years now and its been great! still using the original bottle of Starsan.

I just mixed up a new batch, and the water went cloudy almost straight away! I have never had this happen before, it usually remains pretty clear throughout its use. There also seems to be some small gooey strands inside the water.

Could this be due to a dodgy batch of Tescos Ashbeck spring water, or is my Starsan passed its expiry.

Yes there do appear to be changes to the ashbeck water. I've switched to deionised water, which you can get in supermarkets, robert dyas, halfords etc.

It's not just you, Ashbeck has changed, there are discussions on thebrewingforum.co.uk. It's still effective if the pH is 3 or less. You could try reverse osmosis water e.g. 10p/litre from our local garden centre's aquarium section last time I bought some.

Oh I see, it's beginning to sound a bit like "Peckham Spring Water" from only fools and horses.

Will use de-ionised or reverse osmosis water from now on.

To be fair, Ashbeck has been stable for years. Source is Armathwaite, i.e ground water, so this cloudiness is a bit odd. I emailed Tesco this afternoon.

Tesco phoned this morning - no change to Ashbeck. It's still a mystery.

Made up a 5 litre bottle of StarSan yesterday with Ashbeck bought the day before and I see no cloudiness at all.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

I got 26L or RO last week for brewing yesterday and took 2L off for Starsan so I won't need to buy Ashheck just yet, but good to know.
