bandit, I haven't worked out your maths but at 12.5 ppm your answer will never be correct

I (incorrectly?) worked it out to be 1.25ml per 1,000ml (which is 1 litre)

it would seem from the article that the correct amount is 0.125ml per 1,000ml

Time to work it out properly I think -

12.5 ml : 1,000,000 ml
0.0125 litres : 1,000 litres (both sides divided by 1,000)
0.0000125 litres : 1 litre (both sides divided by 1,000)
0.0125 ml : 1 litre (left side multiplied by 1,000 to convert to ml)

Hmmmm, even this seems wrong to me! I give up! I'm going to keep using 2.5ml per litre It has always worked for me and until somebody corrects me I am going to keep using that amount.

Just to make both your heads explode don't forget that Betadine concentrations may be different to those discussed in the article!

Just use 1/3 - 1/2 tsp of Betadine in 1 litre of water and you're sorted.
Dan!

Hmmm - Think I can sort this out.

Betadine contains 10% povidone iodine (the active bit) rather than 100% therefore once you allow for this reduced concentration, 1.25ml in 1000ml is 12ppm.

I am using Iodophor so should be the same as in the article. I think I got my figures from the bottle label which is why I use them.

Saying that, the lid broke a couple of weeks after having it so I transfered into an empty mini wine bottle.

This is what I have

just out of curiosity, does anyone bother with gloves when handling the stuff? To read the back of the bottle you'd think it was nuclear waste

Gloves ? Na.

Isn't it meant to be used undiluted on wounds etc ?

Certainly is, you'll see it on sterile dressings. You'll also see bottles of it around hospitals with pump dispensers. Newkie, did you get yours locally? I ordered online which added a couple of quid in postage.

Don't you also see surgeons rubbing it into their hands? I am sure I have seen them do this after scrubbing their hands - I may be wrong in this though...

As a kid I remember having yellow/brown knees as a treatment for playground gravel rash, the stain was still there after the scabs had gone, mind you that could have be due to the fact that they only saw water once a week on sunday bath night

Actually had mine shipped in from the states. I've found better US sites like morebeer/northernbrewer but homebrewheaven.com shows international carriage cost as you add items to the cart (you select ireland and economy which is shipped on the slow boat). Now I know the UK sites I'll order from there or even brouland. That said I got a big bottle which will probably last another year or more its so strong.

The stuff I have it B-T-F Iodophor Sanitizer which says its concentrated. One cap will do 5 gallons. There is a large warning which says it is corrosive but I've never bothered with gloves. Typically while I'm sanitizing i'm around running water so i just immediately wash off whatever gets on my hands although occasionally they do get stained yellow.
