Stupid question regarding bleach as a sanitiser

Post by Grahame » Thu Apr 17, 2008 9:11 pm

Hi everyone,

Having read through DaaB's excellent guide, I have decided to try the thin bleach method of sanitising for my next brew. He states that 1/2 a cup of bleach to a 5 gallon fermenter will do the job. What I was wondering, can I just add say 10 L to the fermenter, add in 30ml (i.e. 3ml per litre), add all my equipment, snap the lid on and give it a good shake every few minutes for the entire 20 minute contact, or does this not work and it requires full immersion? Just wondering as that was the way my old commercial sanitisers worked and that way I can use a lot less water.

Thanks guys!

G.

Wow, fast reply!

Thanks again DaaB! I am just making a word document with step by step instructions on the entire process so that I don't overlook anything like I usually do when I start brewing.

Thanks!

Grahame.

I wouldn't do all that shaking of equipment in your fermentor because any scratches put in it could harbour bacteria in the future.
