Post by maxashton » Sat Feb 24, 2007 7:40 pm

Hi folks.
How many mls of Iodophor should one use for a filled-to-the-brim king keg?

Out of interest, why do you want to fill it with iodophor ?

It it's to sanitise it then you don't need to fill the thing.....

Ah. I've got no way of weighing it. I'll just have to judge it by eye. The colour should be fairly easy to match.

As Andy says there is absolutely no need to fill any vessel with Iodophor, in fact if you do and leave it in there for any length of time you will end up with a vessel with brown staining, not nice :(

Am I wrong here, as I thought it was ¼ tsp per litre?

i have always used 1/4 teaspoon per litre. Since i find it easier to measure 1/2 a teaspoon i always use 2 litres when making a batch

Worked OK for me, with no significant staining, but i see your point.
I'll use my standard 2l mixture from now on.

I use two capfuls in 5 gals if i'm filling it up.

Of course, it's much more economical and easier just to spray the inside thoroughly and let it sit for 15mins.

The instructions on the brupaks bottle says 1/2 tsp per litre. I've just started using it, having been in the sterilisational stone age until recently. I see how spraying works because it it kind of covers the whole surface in the way water,VWP, etc, doesn't.

One question. Is it no rinse or not? The opinion here seems to be yes, but the bottle clearly states 'rinse equipment well' How could it be no rinse on the one hand and but not on the 'official' hand. It's iodine....generally not for ingestion.

Don't get me wrong, if you're saying it's no rinse and can give some good reasons why I should ignore the official advice, then I'd be happy :) Less to do!

i chickened out and rinsed anyway, 2 very quick rinses but still a lot easier than VWP etc which i used to end up rinsing countless times or so it felt.

Cheers Daab. All clear now. I'll ring brupaks and see what the concentration of Idophor is.

The draw back with that is unless the water you rinse with is preboiled, then you could be putting bacteria back onto your sanitised surfaces (but that's just being paranoid  )
I use the same water I rinse VWP with, cold mains water - nicely chlorinated against infection :)

How Much Iodophor is no rinse?

Iodophor is 1.6% Povidone Iodine (stated on the bottle) where as
Betadine is only 1% Povidone Iodine. So to get 12.5ppm with Betadine
add 1.25ml/L (simple maths) but Iodophor is 0.8ml/L.
So the no rinse solution is roughly 3 times weaker than the brupack's dosage of 2.5ml (1/2 teaspoon) per L. All I need to do is make up 3L of solution with half a teaspoon. The bottle will last forever!

Cheers, Daab
