Peracetic acid: Is yours stored safely?

Post by Blackaddler » Thu Feb 10, 2011 11:44 am

Just a quick note to remind [or educate] people about the correct storage of peracetic acid.

"Peracetic acid must be stored in its original container in an upright position on an acid-proof floor. Storage conditions require areas with good ventilation, cool temperature and protection from direct sunlight. Any contamination, especially with metal ions, alkalis and reducing agents must be avoided. Keep away from sources of heat and ignition.

Packages are equipped with venting devices to avoid overpressure. Do not cover closures to allow venting. All containers should be checked regularly. The service life of plastic containers with high strength peracetic acid is limited to 12 months."

Note the bit about avoiding overpressure and checking regularly.

I had some concentrated peracetic in a glass bottle in the fridge, which I hadn't opened for some months. Yesterday, it went BANG!

It's extremely nasty stuff to clear up.

I'm going to be giving my future storage options some serious thought. I'll not be keeping it in the house, that's for sure!

Take care...

I was just about to post something similar as I had noticed that my container of peracetic had swollen and after venting was unsafe looking again after a fairly short while.
As the bottle kept swelling up, even when kept in the fridge, I have thrown the stuff away.
I don't think peracetic is safe to store domestically.

Can we have a sticky, please, mods?

I knew this would happen to someone sooner or later!

Blackaddler, may I suggest switching to star san, or videne? Much safer!

Edit: Or saniclean if you're a HERMS type!

I don't recall seeing your warning post....?

all the peracetic I've seen in 5 gallon tubs have a one way vent on the cap, moving it to a different container without a vent is asking for trouble.

It's not really my place to make public warning posts. I'm not a moderator, nor have I personally had an incident with it.

Besides, I'm pretty sure DaaB and others have made posts about the hazards of peracetic acid before!

Sorry guys, after reading use and storage instructions I decided to stay with NaOH for cleaning and ClO2 for disinfection. It's much safer at home. :D

I am sorry guys but you do scare me with what you want to use - as an industrial and analytical chemist I simply wouldnt get involved in handling such substances at home. I see others using Sodium Hydroxide, Hydrochloric Acid, Sulphuric acid. These are all highly dangerous and need to be treated with real care and are not for amateurs in all honesty. I qualified in 1975 and have worked in various labs from 1971 to 2008.

Hi Guys

For all the guys using Peracetic Acid what concentrations do you use for general cleaning and sanitation of beer equipment. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Peracetic is not a cleaner.
It is a great sanitiser and can be made up as a no rinse.
If you can store and handle it, it is very good at what it does.

+1

I have blown up more than my fair share of labs over the years with a variety of fun bits and pieces. Even with my experiences i would only use (very) dilute peracetic at home ....
