Lacto infected fridge disaster

Post by DethApostle » Mon Jun 09, 2014 4:59 pm

So my most recent brew (Orange and Corriander Hefe) was a write off due to a Lacto infection that took hold probably due due to a really slow starting smackpak of yeast...
However I didn't notice until after I'd moved it into a fridge for crash cooling.
In the same fridge I had some harvested yeast from an Irish Red Ale and now all three jars have been infected with Lacto too!

I know that I need to give the fridge a good clean and a proper sanitising to make it safe again, but I thought i'd post here to share my misfortune in not only losing a 5g batch of Hefe but also all my Irish Red yeasties!

For my own interest, how do you know it's Lacto?

Jim: Yes, but not as much as I did on my Brew-Saturday when after cleaning up some spilt beer my mop bucket exploded into 30 pieces spreading it all over the floor again but this time with no way of cleaning it up!

Jambo: Sour smell, thin white film on the surface(similar to the skin on old milk) and a quick comparison to google images led me to this conclusion! (and the fact the yeast jars had exactly the same symtoms)
