How do you remove beerstone?

Post by guypettigrew » Thu Apr 16, 2015 8:42 am

My stainless steel fermenting vessel is getting a build up of beerstone. It's definitely beerstone from the descriptions I've read on line.

It's clear some sort of acid wash is needed to get rid of it, but I can't find any specific details.

Can anyone tell me, please;
  • What acid should be used?
  • What concentration?
  • What temperature?
  • For how long?
Thanks, in advance.

Guy

Edit; Oops, just realised this should have gone in the 'cleaning' section of the board. Apologies. Mods, please feel free to move it.

afaik PBW is the stuff you want, and a SS scrubby to shift stubborn bits.. acids left in contact with SS for any length can pit and damage the stainless.

if its like calcium deposits the boil a solution of 1 part vinegar to 3 parts water. Let it cool completely, then wash and dry as usual.

or a soak in oxyclean and a good scrub
