New to star san

Post by beer gut » Sat Apr 18, 2015 7:12 pm

Hi all I got my first bottle of star san today and I mixed up Morrison own bottled water and it's gone slightly cloudy, I am confused because on one website it says that if it goes cloudy it fine but on other sites it says it's knackered who do I believe because sanitation is paramount in brewing. I Don't own a ph meter or papers. It has gone frothy in the 5 litre bottle which from what I have read it's a good sign.

Cloudy is not a good sign.

Tesco Ashbeck still water works well with Starsan. 1.6ml of Starsan per litre of water.

If its cloudy it should be fine to use then but don't store it, just make up enough for that time. I buy deionized water (the stuff for the car battery).

Yeah I am going buy some tomorrow from halfords. If I had of known I would have bought some today rather than the bottle water. I still think it's better than chlorine based sanitizer.

Tesco Ashbeck 5L is £1.10, Halfords deionized 5L is £2.99.

Small potatoes really but if you want to save a couple of quid...

I use water from a dehumidifier and it stays clear till I've used it all.

Sadly I can't find Ashbeck in the local welsh tesco's (I even work I'm one of them), and the alternating welsh water is no good with star San.
It's a small price to pay for something you can use

Well I am converted too star san I mixed up half a litre of star san with the car battery water and it stayed clear no clouding at all. So I sterilized my conditioning jar and it foamed up lovely. I love this stuff and what's better no rinsing.

Sorry for being late for this one. I've recently picked up some Star San and some de-ionised water from Halfords.

If I wanted to mix the whole 2.5l of water with Star San what would be the correct ratio? Is it 1.6ml to 1l giving a total of 4ml to 2.5l?
