Cleaning stainless steel boiler

Post by Alkey » Sun May 10, 2015 8:25 pm

Hi,
Just upgraded and done 2nd AG in a stainless boiler and wondered if it is OK to use VWP to clean this with. On VWPs website there is no mention of stainless steel, what do you good people do?

Thanks
Al

I use VWP on mine and seems fine. I don't leave it in too long and use one of the plastic scouters. Also make up slightly weak and rinse well.

Use household washing soda diluted at 40 gr litre in very hot water, heat it in tthe boiler, and using a soft cloth wipe the boiler once it has cooled enough. It won't harm stainless steel and it is cheap as chips.

Cheap, unscented oxyclean from Poundstretcher.

Its the same stuff as household soda with added oxygen and a lot more expensive. Soda £1 a kilo
Oxiclean £1 a small tub

Thanks for replies, VWP emailed me and said it is perfectly safe to use just follow normal directions. Think I might get some of that stuff from the pound shop as well. Cheers

Oxyclean works very well at cleaning boilers. You want a nice hot solution.

Yeah but I use ONE blue spoon full to a full (ish) vessel, compare that to 40g/l.
The small tub is ~500g

This stuff is outstanding, I have used it for removing acid splashes from the surface of my pots, great for cleaning electric elements too.

Another alternative is Bar Keeper's friend.

Either way, make sure you give that shiny boiler a good clean before your first boil, or you'll find a metallic scum on the top of your first brew.
Ingredients: Water, Barley, Hops, Yeast, Seaweed, Blood, Sweat, The swim bladder of a sturgeon, My enemies tears, Scenes of mild peril, An otter's handbag and Riboflavin.

Yes did a full boil after installing the parts, nice to have plenty of headspace as well.

Last time I went to asda, it was 59p a kg. and IMHO it's better than the poundland oxi.

Never seen oxy anywhere at ~59p / kg. Will check Asda at lunchtime but I'd be very surprised if it was that cheap, a good price is around £2/kg. Soda crystals are ~70p/kg though.
