Where to buy milkstone remover (cheaper name for brewstone remover)

Post by SMASH3R » Wed Oct 06, 2021 7:32 pm

As posted in the title.

I'm looking to buy 5L of milkstone remover, which should be the same stuff as brewstone remover, just £15 For 5L instead of £15 For 500ml.

Does anyone know of any online retailers or agricultural suppliers around Leicester Notts Derby area please?

I could do with giving my brew kettle a birthday.

Did you try Google? This seems to be what you want.

How bad does this build up then?

I've got some in bottles that I can't shift, and over time it can build up reasonably bad in the boiler, depending on water hardness.

I get beerstone in my FVs, but never seen it in my bottles. It wipes off stainless FV if tackled immediately after racking with a soft cloth and water. Some places it is stubborn but comes off with dilute acid and effort.

When I used plastic FVs, I wasn't keen to wipe it off lest the plastic be scratched. For that I made up a mix of 300ml water with 6gm of caustic soda and 12g of EDTA. That was poured into the FV, tilted and slowly turned. The beer stone simply dissolved and the clear liquid went milky. This was repeated a second time and afterwards there was no sign of any contamination to the plastic. A funny thing was that while that worked perfectly on plastic, it didn't perform as well on stainless.

I'd think seriously as to how your bottles have been contaminated with beerstone, or if it might be something else? Calcium oxalate is what gallstones are made of, and if it's in your bottles, you'll be drinking it. With enough disassociated calcium in your mash liquor, most can be deposited in the mash tun as it is insoluble, then little should then get beyond the fermentor.
Without patience, life becomes difficult and the sooner it's finished, the better.

Can you do a picture please?

No trying to be difficult, but I am not sure I have seen this. Been brewing and using the same bottles for years.

The people at Starsan reckon a x4 strength of Starsan will remove beerstone. I always give my SS fermenter a spray with this after cleaning.

Yeah, not surprised. I did look at my Starsan this weekend whilst kegging up and realised/remembered that like beerstone remover the major ingredient is phosphoric acid.
I actually have 4.5 litres of Jenolite rust converter (Phorphoric acid) in the shed. I think I'm going to be tight and give that a go at first in the bottles that I have a problem with (on the basis that glass can be cleaned thoroughly and rinsed to be contaminant free).

CRS will remove beerstone. I think any acid will do, maybe vinegar would work. Brick acid is cheap but maybe to aggressive?

CRS is a good call.

Vinegar doesn't. I had a real issue with beer stone in bottles and tried all sorts of sh1te.

I found acid and a bottle brush needed.... Oh and I now treat my water!
