Standard Bitter - Whitley Brewery (Oli1979)

Nice hiss on opening, and pours a lovely bright copper with a fluffy white head, just how a Standard Bitter should be! Well balanced aroma, with biscuit, floral and a slight metallic bitterness. Classic biscuity, bready nose gives way to a floral aftertaste with a gently balanced bitterness. Slight sweetness comes in with a long satisfying aftertaste. Absolutely bang on English bitter. Good job!

Whitley Brewery - Chuck Norris IPA 4.5%
by Oli1979

Image

Pours a deep orange/red colour, with a haze. Nice thick white fluffy head, that soon disperses, but does leave some lacing on the glass. I did have to wait when pouring. It has a full body and great smooth feel on the back of the palate. On the nose you get grapefruit and lemons, and some tropical fruits. From the malts I get hints of caramel. As for taste it's not as hoppy as I expected it to be, but it is well balanced. You get a big citrus grapefruit taste which mellows out in to a slight grassy taste which lingers around.

Joe Blob IPA 5.4%

Image

Pours a golden yellow colour, very clear without haze. There is a cream tightly packed head, which lasts throughout the glass with some lacing. bits of sediment in the glass, even with a careful pour. There is a good carbonation level for this bottle which suits the IPA style. I would say there is a great mouthfeel, which leaves you feeling refreshed. On the nose there is a lemon aroma, which is very mellow. On to taste, for your first mouthful you get a very hoppy lemon and evergreen flavour, then it fizzles out into a lime after taste with hints of banana . There is no doubt about this been an American IPA, it's really bitter/hoppy with a slight yeasty notes.

Very refreshing ale, one to savour during the hot weather

Drumhead Brewery - Four Finger Jack 5.6%

Image

Opens with a good hiss and pours a nice clear golden colour. There is a fluffy head which is off white in colour and loose bubbles. The carbonation is spot on and gives you a crisp mouth feel. Some lacing on the glass. On the nose you get a fruitiness if fresh lemons and mild tropical fruits. As for flavour, it's got a crisp and refreshing citrus taste, that gets to the back of your palate and leaves you wanting more and more to drink. There is a slight dryness from the malts, but you wouldn't be able to tell this was from a kit. These kits are fantastic quality!

Planck Length Brewery - Olympus Mons 5.6%

Image

Opens with a massive hiss and a mini eruption. Pours an hazy orange colour, with a biscuit colour head, that starts off large and fizzles to a smaller compact head. To say it started off very carbonated, it's not followed through into the ale. This has a spicy and yeasty aroma, and a good solid malt backbone. I actually get a slight coffee taste to it, not sure why. On to flavour there is a very bitter banana taste that leaves a dry feeling in your mouth, it's an ale that would take me a while to drink on a evening.

Drumhead Brewery - Proper Job 4.3%

Image

Opens with a medium hiss, and a nice smokey wisp coming out the bottle. Pours a lovely amber colour, which is very clear. It's also has a light yellow head, which is tightly packed bubbles. On the nose you get a fruity hit, which seems to have alot melon about it. This is a well balanced ale, with just the right amount of malt to the hoppy flavour. I'm picking up a big melon fruit flavour, which is crisp and ripe. There is also a hint of mild lemons.

Overall this is a really tasty pint! Great abv and just the right type of ales for those warm summer evenings.

Whitley Brewery - Standard Bitter 4.5%

Image

Opens with a good hiss. Pours a cracking light copper colour, nice and clear, no chill haze. The head was rather lively and large. It's a very fluffy loose head, but does disappear during drinking. Good amount of lacing. I did chill this down to around 8c. On the nose I'm getting a slight yeasty smell and a floural aroma. This is a very well balanced standard bitter, it's a typical English bitter, not over hopped and has a nice toffee and biscuit malt base. On the tongue, you pick up a grassy and floural flavour with a hint of black pepper, I would love to try this on cask!

Liam, Phil, Stysbru - The Black Cock IBS - 6.2%

Image

Opens with a nice hiss, and puts a thick jet black colour, with a shall light brown head, that doesn't seen to hang around. The body is a little thin for this high abv ale, but is very smooth, and easy on the palate. On opening the bottle you got a massive aroma hit. There is espresso coffee, dark chocolate and a hint of molasses. Then you come to the taste, you first off get this fresh brew coffee, which then turns in to a oak wood taste. There is also a slight dryness in this, that is a little ash like, and after a whole tastes chocolatey.

I wouldn't mind the recipes for this!

The Kitch Inn - Four Finger Jack 4.6%

Image

Opens with a good hiss, and pours the typical hazy orange American IPA colour. Has an off white head, that is loosely packed bubble, there is a vast amount of bubbles coming up the glass, but the carbonation is spot on.
On the nose there is citrus fruits and hints of grapefruit. On to the taste and first off all, you get this slight sour citrus flavour that is very Limey, then this turns into a slight metallic taste. There is a dryness coming from the malts.
It's a nice pint, but is very different to the one I tried from drumhead brewery

Whitley Brewery - Hefe Weissen 4.6%

Image

Pours a deep brown copper colour, which is hazy, as expected with a wheat beer. Carbonation is very good, however the body is a little thin for my liking.Very light brown tight head, that sticks to the glass, but sadly doesn't last. The aroma is an earthy muddy smell. For the taste there is also this rich earthy taste and a big yeast taste, this is very lightly hopped, and well balanced for a wheat beer. The dryness is there, but it only comes late on

Planck Length Brewery - Inertial Confinement Fision 5.5%

Image

Pours a murky light brown / orange colour, very tiny white head around the edge of the glass. Almost no carbonation to the ale, it's like it came straight out of a cask, which I like. There is a nice sweet malt base, a little like caramel with a hint of milk chocolate. There is a fruit and slight rum aroma, then the taste is one which is very fruity, it also has a sweetness like honey on the tongue. There is also am American feel to this ale

Planck Length Brewery - Nebula 2.1%

Image

Opens its a nice hiss, and pours.... Well pours a very lively volcano! Haha, it's very well carbonated, even after chilling. It's a lovely bright and hazy pale orange colour, with a thing, fluffy white loose head. On the nose you get cutris and evergreen aroma, from the malt base I get the dryness of wheat major and a sweetness of Munich & Vienna, it's nicely blanced, just a little thin bodied. On to taste and I'm getting a yeasty hit first, then the freshness of cascade comes into play, this is a great attempt at a low abv ale, something that i would be happy with if I brewed.

Come Taste That Beer Brewery - Wring That Neck 5.3%

Image

Pours a light orange colour, with a slight haze. Nice fluffy off white head, which last all the way to the end of the glass. Good lacing and the carbonation is spot in for this style. There is a medium body, and a slight oily feeling is left on the palate. There is a nice dry wheat base which is balanced fantastically with the flavour. On the nose fruit notes and hints of pine. On to the taste, you get this citrus and perfume flavour, that mellows out into a refreshing lemon taste, that leaves you wanting more.

Very nice ale, massive improvement on the last ales I tried! Well done

Just to say that we now have a forum especially for bottle swap reviews (and for commercial brews for that matter).

To encourage people to use the new place, I'm going to lock this thread. Please start a new thread for each review - it's far easier to find stuff when it's not buried in a single massive thread after all! I'll move this thread in there, leaving a link here so that people can find their way.

Link to the new forums.
