Robertson's Old Fart

Post by MarkA » Thu Feb 15, 2024 2:09 pm

When I was about 18 (ahem), I used to occasionally drink in the New Inn, Littlehampton, and I remember they had a beer called 'Old Fart' by Robertson's Brewery (not to be confused with Robinson's). Being a guest beer, it was only there for a short time.

I found out one night where it got its name from. In the middle of the night, and after having several pints, I awoke needing a pee. All was well until I got back into my bedroom and it was only then that the fog hit me! Jeez, the air was thick that night. What's probably more scarey is that I don't remember farting at all, so would have been pumping away in my sleep (the consequences of that are risky, to say the least).

Anyway, does anyone remember this beer from back then? Or the brewery? I can't find anything online about it, and would assume they were reasonably local to the Sussex/Kent/Hampshire area. This would have been 1990ish.

The only beer I remember by that name was Merrimans.

Aha! Now you could be on to something here.

Having a search under Merriman's, they acquired the rights to brew Old Fart from Robinwood Brewers & Vintners, who were active between 88 - 93, so the right era. Robinson were also contracted to brew it, though this was for Merriman's so 94 onwards which is too late for me, and most of the beer was bottled after this date, so it's most likely the cask beer I had would have been from Robinwood. Reading the flavour profile, it certainly sounds like the same beer.

Two things could have happened - one is that the landlord wrote the incorrect name on the chalk board (possible but probably unlikely). Two is that I've remembered the name wrong (could well be this, some things are pretty hazy from back then!).

Right, now to try to track down a recipe. Thanks oz11 =D>

Nice one, Mashbag! I did search for OF before posting, but the top posts were about being an old fart, or farting about with stuff, I should have persevered!

I'm due a malt order soon so will give this a go :D
