Oh yes, I'd forgotten that. So, you'd be using the alkalinity meter just twice for each brew!
I'm sure you've explained it elsewhere on the forum, but I can't find it now. If you're making (for example) 20 litres of beer, using (for example) 5kg of grain, do you mash in about 25L of liquor and then drain the wort off?

Why not just use the Salifert test kits, they are accurate enough for brewing and a lot cheaper.

Yes indeed, clarets7. The Salifert test kits are excellent. Not super accurate, but good enough.
Except I always found them a bit fiddly to use and the value on the syringe never quite matched the values in the table!
The Hanna is great. You put a cuvette of water in to 'zero' it, add the reagent, put the cuvette back in and a clear digital read out gives the alkalinity. Yes, expensive, but worth it as far as I'm concerned.
Bought one yet MB?!!

Couldn't deny that! Plus I like the ease of use and greater accuracy.
pH papers are fine, but I prefer a pH meter. Same thing.

I agree reading the syringe is fiddly, and with my low alkalinity water even more so. They say you can get more tests by using only 2mL of water, does it work the other way round, if I used 8mL water and divided the result by two would that be valid

Yup standard braumeister 20 process. 30l liquor in 23l wort out.

Not yet, but never say never. This has started a whole new "thing" cos there is a chance the hardness affects our pickles too.
