Water Analysis

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Water Analysis

Post by tuffty22 » Thu Sep 08, 2022 5:08 pm

Hi all

Does anyone know if wallybrew is still doing the water analysis?

I used to get mine done pretty regular but i havent had an email from him since May. Just want to check if hes ok really rather than get my water done as I was a regular.

Cheers

He analysed for me early last year.

And I’ve seen posts from him in recent weeks, so definitely OK, but that doesn’t say he’s still doing paid for analyses.

Last time I emailed him about it he took ages to reply. In the meantime I had got a water report from Murphys

Yeah its a bit odd as I used to get an email every month and usually had it analysed 9/10.

Given the fact i have had it done for the last couple of years I was just hoping he was ok

Not a great deal. A couple of thing's moved more than others but fairly similar month on month

I ask as I am new to water treatment after trying to solve a problem in my beer (and my mates it would seem)

Turns out that after the recent dry spell water companies have been sourcing & blending water to meet demand, so it follows (doh) that it had changed. I wondered if this was a regular thing.

I think that depends on your water company. My water hasn't changed much when I have had it tested about once a year over the last three years, but people have told me theirs has changed significantly over time.

Guy is pestering me 😄 to get a hanna alkalinity tester.
I just can't work out how much I will use it. Particularly when swimming pool test strips are 50p a thousand 🤣🤣

Go on MB, you know, deep down, you'd love a new brewing toy!

You'll use it at least twice each brew day. First to measure the alkalinity of the raw water, then to measure the alkalinity after adding the CRS, just to make sure it's where you want it. You may also use it a third time if you reduce the alkalinity of the liquor further before sparging.

Well worth the money. Quick and easy to use and a very clear display.

Yup. Alkalinity dropped to about 20ppm for the mash liquor for light beers. That is, beers with lots of pale malt and light adjuncts but no dark crystal, or chocolate malts etc. Higher mash liquor alkalinity is OK for darker beers.

For sparging it's good to drop the alkalinity of the liquor by another 10ppm.

This has all been learned from Eric's advice. Nothing I've worked out for myself. Thanks Eric.
