Brupaks Phosphoric Acid

(That's water to the rest of us!) Beer is about 95% water, so if you want to discuss water treatment, filtering etc this is the place to do it!

Brupaks Phosphoric Acid

Post by WessexWyvern » Wed Dec 06, 2023 4:00 pm

Does anyone know the neutralizing strenth of Brupaks phosphoric acid in terms of how much CaCO3 is neutralized by 1ml of acid?
Thanks

What are you trying to do?

I can only guess you are trying to neutralise something reported as CaCO3? Hardness? in tap water? I can say with certainty there is no, or very little, CO3++ in your tap water, so be careful who you listen to.

You can figure out the answer using "as CaCO3", but I'm not sure how to do it off the top of me 'ead (I'm not sure there's anything in the top of me 'ead), but I do know the question you're asking could result in some very weird answers. (Err, is this one?)

Is it this?

... 75%, whoever can answer needs to know that.

As a close approximation take the brupaks table and multiply the carbonate reduced by 4. This would give 1ml of phosphoric reducing the carbonate by 732 whereas it really calculates to 720 but as the strength of the acid is probably +/- a few % then its a probably acceptable.

Thanks.
I've since found the above post from Wallybrew which is very close to the figure I arrived at empirically a while back, I just wasn't sure about it and needed someone to confirm it - I get the impression WB knows a little bit about water, right?
Also yes, that's the stuff. My supply is quite old
(don't know if mine says 75%, there's not much left of the label)

Yeap, I've had it confirmed to still be 75% ... I was just worried that it might be out-of-date as many do appear to have reduced concentration recently ... or else just removed the stuff from sale.

And I'm certainly not contradicting anything Wallybrew says ... or I'll get me ears boxed.
