Brewing terminology/acronyms

Post by chairmanmaw » Wed Oct 22, 2008 1:28 pm

Hello all,

Being a new kid to all this brewing stuff, Im getting lost on some of the terminology and acronyms being used on this forum.

Is there a reference guide or teminology posting on here that gives an explanation, in layman's terms, of the various specific words in use on the forum?

If so, can someone send me the link? I've trawled through the various entries on the forum and cant seem to find one.

if not, can we compile one?

Thanks,

:o Maw

AA = Alpha Acids (the bittering component of hops)
ABA = American Brown Ale
AG = All-Grain
BU = Bittering Units a.k.a. IBU
CRS = Compagnies Républicaines de Sécurité (French riot police) or Carbonate Reduction Solution (a mixture of acids for reducing the alkalinity of your brewing liquor
DME = Dried Malt Extract
FG = Final Gravity
FV = Fermentation Vessel
H&G = a well-known homebrew shop
HERMS = Heat Exchanger Recirculating Mash System
IG = Isinglass (a fining agent made from fish swim-bladders)
IPA = India Pale Ale
MO = Maris Otter (a high-grade British pale malt)
MT = Mash Tun (frequently a picnic cool-box or plastic boiler)
OG = Original Gravity
PG = Present Gravity
PH or more properly pH = how acid a solution is on a scale of 1 = e.g. conc. hydrochloric acid, 14 = conc. caustic soda
RIMS = Recirculating Infusion Mash System
RO = Reverse Osmosis (a kind of water softener, also technology used in kidney dialysis - the liquid is pumped past a membrane, and salts pass across the membrane to the side with less pressure or lower concentration)
S-23 = Safale 23 (a well-loved ale yeast)
SG = Specific Gravity (the thing you measure with a hydrometer, where 1000 or 1.000 is pure water), used to measure sugar concentration e.g. OG or FG
SRM = (sorry I can't remember - anyone?)
TTL = Transistor-Transistor Logic or Timothy Taylor Landlord

Seeing as we're here, what's a CAP (besides a barmy European policy)?

CAP=Classic American Pilsner. Not to be confused with BMC (Bud-Miller-Coors) beers, this one actually tastes of something. AFAIK there aren't many (any?) commercial examples.

Great idea... there must be tons. I just added Added, CO2, H2O, DLS, LME, if that's OK. What about SM for spray malt. Not sure if that is used as an acronym here. I'll let my peers decided.

I've made this a sticky at Edit1now's request - it does seem like a useful thread for newbies!
