I was told in wikibrew that perle was a substitute for nugget but now have been looking and it seems it is used mainly for lagers. Have and am inteding to do a porter this week and have all of the ingredients, do you think it will be ok to go ahead with the perle?

It's used in ales also, If you are using it primarily as a bittering hop it should be OK regardless.

As MM says, that hop should be fine. The thing to remember about Porters or most of the darker ales is that they don't have as much (or any) late hop additions. So, whatever hop you decide on, don't aim to have it's flavour in the foreground as it will be competing with the roast/bitterness flavours of the darker malts.
