Crystal Rye - To mash or not to mash?

Post by Waffty » Sun Apr 12, 2009 6:52 pm

Hi,

I bought some Crystal Rye from Hop & Grape (Brupaks stuff) on my last spending spree (pre-credit it crunch :cry: ) but since reading all my recently purchase literature, I'm now confused, as to whether I need to mash it or not? As Rye is listed as a mash'able grain but then again, the reference to Crystal, implies that it's already been modified, so do I steep or do I mash :?:

Was looking forward to using the rye for a bit of redness + toffee flavour & a bit of head retention [-o<

Yours confused.
Darren.
Fermenting - Nothing
Conditioning - Nothing
Drinking - Tea
Planning - Everything, if only I had the time ... !!

I don't know the answer to your question Darren, but if it's no, the link below may be of interest to you;

Thanks Richard, good link =D>

I've done a little more looking into this & think I'll give it a go, without mashing. As all references to Crystal I can find, make references to the fact that it's already been modified, so should be fine to steep :wink:

regarding things with 'Crystal' in the name, does this mean that different shades of Crystal malt are available for Extract brewing?
